The winners are posted just underneath the category, and then a brief (most of the time) explanation of my choice is under that. Please enjoy.
Overall best picture of the year goes to:
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
Ok, I made this one really hard on me. Black Swan was a fantastic movie with great acting, same with The Social Network. But I don't know if I will watch those movies again, good as they were. Then we get to the other three. Those I could watch over and over again (and all but Inception I have done just that). Then we get to Scott Pilgrim. That movie got to me in so many ways. It was clever and hilarious, well acted, and threw out reference after reference to pop culture. And I love that. Also I feel like this movie did not get the attention it deserved, so do yourself a favour, and go out and rent Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.
Best Action Movie of the Year goes to:
Kick-Ass
This category came down to two choices for me; Iron Man 2 and Kick-Ass. Both had amazing action sequences, and some pretty funny lines. But Kick-Ass had a heart. It was all about getting up and being the change you thought the world needed. I must say that this movie is not for the faint of heart. It more than earned it's 18A (Restricted for the Americans) rating with it's violence. But then that was one of the pulls for the film. It was being advertised as a hyper-violent film. It lived up to that promise, and gave more than that, and for those reasons it is my choice for Best Action Movie of the Year.
Best Comedy:
How To Train Your Dragon
Really, how could this not win? It was frickin hilarious! And the dragons looked so cute! Don't tell anyone I said that, not that they would ever believe you. Anyways, I really enjoyed Red, I got a bunch of laughs out of it, and I have not watched it since I saw it in theatres. How To Train Your Dragon on the overhand, after the first time I watched it in my dorm, I knew that if I was going to make my parents watch any movie, it was going to be this one. And I made them watch, and they even loved it.
Best Director of the Year:
Edgar Wright
How can the director of the film that won Best Overall Film not win best director? Add to the fact that he directed some of my favourite comedies of all time (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) and you have a winner! Thanks Edgar for making some of my favourite films. I look forward to your work in the future.
Best Actor in a Film:
Robert Downey Jr.
Do I really need to say more? The guy embodies the roles he plays in an amazing way. I can watch his performances over and over again. And he is pretty much the greatest presenter in Academy history.
Best Actress in a Film:
Natalie Portman
I know, I am jumping on board with every other Award out there, but she deserved it. I mean REALLY deserved it. Plus she was in three Star Wars movies so ya know, she needs something good. Emma Watson was an extremely close second.
Best Supporting Actor in a Film:
Alan Rickman
He IS Professor Severus Snape, he doesn't just play him in the Harry Potter films. I cannot wait to see his performance in the last half of The Deathly Hallows. I was tempted to give Andrew Garfield the Dormies for a couple reasons: a) he is a great actor; b) he was in two episodes of Doctor Who, lucky bugger. By the way, the second one was the most important consideration.
Best Supporting Actress in a Film:
Helena Bonham Carter
Again, she is Bellatrix Lestrange. I mean, just look at her, she suits the role in every way. Add to that the fact that she is married to Tim Burton, she lives up to her character's name.
Best Television Drama Not Science Fiction:
Hawaii Five-O
This is the only show on that list that I watch faithfully. It's not just another CSI or even another NCIS but something all it's own. A remake of a hit sixties television series, that is modern while still using the original theme music. Plus it stars a vampire and a Cylon. Not in those roles of course, but I'm a nerd. And I love BSG... I may have been biased in this regard.
Best Television Drama Science Fiction:
Doctor Who
Dang son, this was a hard one. I love all of those shows almost equally. The Walking Dead has zombies! Zombies! That look fantastic! Supernatural is funny, violent, and sometimes poignant. The Vampire Diaries is sort of a guilty pleasure of mine, and yet it does have some phenomenal acting and good story lines. Same goes for True Blood. Great actors (in looks and skills), great writing, and real vampires (no sparkling, and burn in the sun kind of vampires). I have loved the Stargate franchise for years, I own all the DVDs for all three series and all three movies (I have even watched most of Stargate: Infinity), but I am still not really sure how I feel about SG:U. Sanctuary is a groundbreaking series (seriously, look it up) with Amanda Tapping at the helm. But the Brits did it right. Judging on just the season that aired in the 2009/2010 period, Doctor Who reigned supreme. With a new younger Doctor (Matt Smith), a cute Scottish ginger (Karen Gillan) for a companion, and a new man in charge (Steven Moffat, who also is in charge of the amazing Sherlock on BBC (and is Scottish)) the show was better than ever. The leads have some of the best, if not THE best, chemistry I have seen on the small screen. This is a series that has had huge names attached to it; Simon Pegg had a guest role, Andrew Garfield was in a two-parter, and Academy Award winning actor Colin Firth has said in interviews that one of his dreams is to be a bad guy on Doctor Who. This show has power in Britain, and is gaining it in North America as well. I think I may watch all of season 5 again--tonight. If you ever had the slightest inkling to watch this series, start with season five.
Best Actor in a Television Drama not Science Fiction:
Scott Caan
Man that guy is good. That's all I can really say...
(special note: if I had remembered to add Nathan Fillion for his role on Castle to the list, he would have automatically won. If you don't know why, go watch Firefly. RIGHT NOW!)
Best Actor in a Television Drama Science Fiction:
Matt Smith
He is, in my opinion, the best Doctor in a long while. Keep in mind that the series of Doctor Who has been on air since 1963. It is the longest running sci-fi series in the world (Stargate: SG-1 was the longest running North American sci-fi series) with many actors taking the titular role. And Matt Smith is so far my favourite.
Best Actress in a Television Drama not Science Fiction:
Grace Park
Again, this one was kind of biased. She was a Cylon. A frakkin great Cylon (catch the reference? don't understand it? Frak was used in the remake of BSG to replace the F-word). And she is still a good actor in Hawaii Five-O, plus she surfs in a couple episodes.
Best Actress in a Television Drama Science Fiction:
Karen Gillan
This was another hard pick for me, I mean Summer Glau was on the list. It should have been an instant win for her. She played a mentally damaged girl who was a programmed master killer on Firefly, was a Terminator on The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and was able to withstand Howard Wolowitz's advances on The Big Bang Theory. But no, Karen Gillan takes it. She brings an innocence, and some sexuality, to Doctor Who. She exceeds the previous companions by far in my books. She makes the character of Amy Pond seem real. She makes you feel her. And she is a feisty red-headed Scot, which never hurts anything.
Most Looking Forward to Film of 2011:
Sucker-Punch/Thor/Captain America: The First Avenger
I was going to take a cop-out and say all of them, but I felt like that was cheating. So I took a smaller cop-out and name three! Zack Synder has not failed me yet (director of 300, and The Watchmen) and Sucker-Punch looks trippy. And amazing. Go watch the trailers, and find the posters. Kenneth Branagh directing a superhero movie? Yes please! And the Cap because, he is the Cap.
Most Looking Forward to New Television Series of 2011:
Game of Thrones
By far. It looks simply astounding. And it's HBO so you just know it's going to be quality. Personally I am hoping it is going to be of the same quality as HBO's Rome. Camelot came close, and I was impressed with it's premiere, but most of the time while watching it I was thinking about Game of Thrones.
